1. Mrs. Chanda Devi – “Dignity within the household due to literacy”
Mrs. Chanda Devi wife of Mr. Akhilesh Mandal, has two daughters and one son. She is from economically poor background and did not have an opportunity to go to school. Her husband migrated to Punjab and works as a daily wage labor and supports the family while Chanda Devi takes care of her children alone. She chose to attend the computer based adult literacy class offered in the comfort of her village and completed three months of literacy class. She is now able to read, write and also count. She spends time with her children and also learns from them by revising from her text book. She is now able to check on their homework and also able to understand how to keep track of money and writes it down making it easier for her husband to understand the family expenses. She has earned the trust of her husband and also win his confidence in handling agricultural income and activities. Her ideas and thoughts are now being accepted by her husband especially in financial matters. The respect that she has earned within her family motivated her to complete the ALP successfully. The family is very happy and her husband expressed his gratitude to Help A Child of India for providing literacy skill to his wife.
